Bitter Sugar….

IN a recent move by the Government to save sugar Industry which is in doldrums is a classic joke by itself.  First of all to offer a Rs. 6k cr. aid to ailing industry which is burdened with over Rs. 21k cr; but where did it all start? Let us look at some facts.

India boasts of having over 1600 large and medium dams which is second only to USA, and around 75% of the fresh water is used to chemically cultivate cash crops mainly sugarcane that too in a mere 3-4% of cultivable land.  I know it’s too much of a data to crunch in one sentence; the point here is we dam(n) the fresh waters of the river add dangerous chemicals to grow food and look at the plight of the farmers who are growing, are they happy? A Big NO !

The support price for sugarcane has been constantly growing owing to higher input cost and deteriorating soil conditions.  Each time it’s the farmer’s cry that has to outreach to increase the support price of sugarcane.  Now after selling it to the sugar mills, the bills are unpaid, as the companies are not in great financial health.

Ever since sugar as a commodity got decontrolled, there has been significant increase in the number of manufacturers.  However the paradox is, these companies barely have a good balance sheet which would attract any Institution or Investment Company or a fund manager, and no one wants it in their portfolio.

Now coming to sugar, the sweetener of life is compounded with over 60 chemicals which make it whiter of whitest and deadlier of deadliest, often misunderstood by our growing lifestyle disorder victims blaming sugar as the main culprit for their condition.  Alas, the sweet in the sugar is not the real culprit; the associated chemicals cause several damages which most of the consumers are unaware of.  The sweetener only adds calories which we are incapable of burning thereby leading to fat accumulation.  Again a serious case of mistaken identity for sugar.

In this whole sequence I did not find one happy segment.  Then why is Government giving so much emphasis on building the dams in the pretext of benefiting farmers and industry, rather adding a whole society of unhealthy citizens with lifestyle disorders.  It is like blaming the noodle manufacturer for lead and toxins in the recent past when they are not even adding it as an essential ingredient while manufacturing.  The real culprit is the soil on which the necessary ingredients were grown as cash crops.  Are we to realize this truth?

pesticideTell me, research has proved traces of toxins and dangerous chemicals in mother’s milk; are we going to ban MOTHERS? Crazy I might sound, but even after this, if I have not provoked your thoughts, the intention of writing is not served.

However good the intentions of the Government in making key policies, it invariably leads to multiple complexities.  The idea of this write up is not to question the policy making authority, but for us to make clear choice; the choice for clear air, water & food and above all it is the taxpayers money throughout the process getting dwindled.
